Many across the region are mourning the death of John Malone, a familiar and trusted voice in both radio and television whose career spanned decades across Tennessee and Alabama.
A native of Lincoln County, Malone began his broadcasting journey as a high school student at WEKR in 1979. What started as a student opportunity grew into a lifelong passion for local media and community service. Over the years, his voice became recognizable across multiple states, and his leadership helped shape the direction of regional broadcasting.
In 2021, his career came full circle when he became president and CEO of Elk River Media, LLC, the owner of WEKR AM 1240 and WYTM FM 105.5. Under his leadership, the stations continued their longstanding tradition of serving local communities with news, music and connection.
Colleagues described Malone as a mentor and a unifying force who brought people together through his love of community. His final conversation with the Elk Valley Times general manager and editor reflected that spirit of affection and loyalty, ending with mutual expressions of “I love you.”
Malone is remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. Additional coverage of his life and legacy is expected in the next edition of the Elk Valley Times.
