Lawrence County Sheriff John Myers is warning residents about a phone scam after his office received approximately 25 complaints from potential victims.
According to a video posted on the Lawrence County, TN Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, callers are posing as sheriff’s deputies and telling residents they have a federal or state warrant for their arrest. The scammer claims to have spoken personally with the sheriff and says he “OK’d” handling the matter over the phone. Victims are then instructed to contact a local bonding company and wire money to resolve the issue.
The sheriff said the calls are fraudulent and emphasized that his office will not contact individuals by phone to settle court matters or request money transfers.
Residents who receive such a call are urged to hang up immediately, block and report the number, and notify the sheriff’s office by calling 931-762-0450 so the incident can be documented.
Authorities say they are aware of the scam and want the public to be aware as well.
