RC only attended school through the Eighth grade as he was needed to provide more help on the farm.
Things would continue the same for several years until that infamous day, December 7th, 1941. With the nation now gearing up for America’s entry into the Second World War, RC would be turning 18 just weeks after that fateful day. Working on an active farm meant that he was not sent off to Europe right away, but the call came and he reported to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia in November of 1943. He would then be shipped over to Europe on the First day of July 1944. The trip would take 2 weeks and arriving in southern Italy on the 15th day of that month.
After arriving in Europe, he would go on to see action in four different theaters of the war, Italy (Rome–Arno), Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. It was in the second theater of Southern France, that he would earn a Purple Heart Medal, a mere two and half months after arriving in Europe. He was struck in the arm and the injury also resulted in damaging his hearing in his adjacent ear. He was only out of commission for a short time and managed to escape any further casualty for his remaining time in the war. During his time, he also was able to achieve the rank of Sergeant and worked with the mortar crews.
Finally, the call came in early 1946, after over 18 months of active service, that he would finally be heading back home to Lawrence County, Tennessee.
Just two years later after marrying Ruth in 1946, he bought his farm in 1948 where he would live the rest of his long life. After farming for several years, he started working at Murray Ohio bicycle plant in Lawrenceburg where he would work until he retired at 62.
He and Ruth were very active in the Middle Tennessee Fair where they would enter produce and pies that were frequently award winners. After he retired, they would travel to all 50 states with a travel group.
He and Ruth attended New Prospect Church of Christ for many years where he was an elder. In later years, they would move to the Pulaski Street Church of Christ in Lawrenceburg.
