AAA – The Auto Club Group is urging Tennessee drivers to prioritize safety as Valentine’s Day celebrations are expected to increase traffic and risky driving behaviors across the state.
With the holiday falling on a Saturday, officials anticipate heavier traffic, more late-night outings and a higher risk of impaired and distracted driving. AAA spokeswoman Megan Cooper said a Saturday holiday tends to bring more celebrations and higher traffic, creating increased risks of impaired and distracted driving. She added that planning rides ahead of time can help protect people during busy evenings.
Distracted driving is a concern as drivers navigate crowded restaurants, unfamiliar destinations and last-minute plans. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2023. AAA noted that even briefly checking a phone to confirm a reservation or message can significantly increase the risk of a crash.
AAA recommended that drivers program GPS devices before leaving, ask passengers to assist with directions, silence notifications and pull over safely if they need to send a message.
Impaired driving is also expected to rise as more couples attend dinners and parties. AAA highlighted that weekend holidays historically see higher rates of alcohol-related crashes and emphasized that a DUI arrest in Tennessee can exceed $10,000 in fines, legal fees and insurance increases. National data cited by the organization shows 34 people die in drunk driving crashes every day — roughly one every 42 minutes.
Officials encouraged drivers to designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service or taxi, or consider staying overnight if alcohol is part of their plans. Cooper said AAA stresses that making safe choices ensures everyone gets home safely and helps celebrations end on a positive note.
