The Muscle Shoals City Council has voted to overturn the termination of former City Clerk Brittany Walker following a lengthy, court-like appeal hearing Monday night.

According to Shoals Insider, Walker had formally appealed her termination, triggering a hearing before the city council that began at 6 p.m. and lasted until approximately 11 p.m. Under city procedures, the council served as the deciding body on whether to uphold or reverse the mayor’s decision to terminate her employment.

During the hearing, both the city and Walker’s legal counsel were allowed to present evidence, call witnesses, and make arguments. City officials had indicated in advance that the proceeding would resemble a courtroom setting, with council members deliberating after all testimony was heard.

Walker was previously placed on administrative leave while a multi-faceted investigation was conducted. The investigation focused on the city’s participation in a medical reimbursement plan that a city auditor and city attorneys had reportedly advised officials to discontinue. Earlier this year, the city council voted to cease participation in the program, and Walker was subsequently terminated by Mayor David Bradford Hudson.

Walker was represented during the appeal by Florence attorney Jeff Austin.

After deliberating, the city council returned to the auditorium and announced its decision to overturn Walker’s termination, effectively reversing the earlier action.

No immediate details were released regarding next steps following the council’s decision.
