The Giles County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam involving fraudulent claims related to electronic ankle monitoring. In a recent incident, a person released from the Giles County Jail was contacted by someone falsely claiming to represent an electronic monitoring company and told they had been mistakenly released and would be returned to jail unless they paid more than $500 for a GPS ankle monitor. The caller instructed the victim to create a cryptocurrency account and provide account information, resulting in the loss of money.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that if a GPS ankle monitor is required as a condition of release, it is installed before an individual leaves custody. Legitimate monitoring companies will never request payment through cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, gift cards, or similar methods. Anyone receiving a call of this nature is urged not to provide personal or financial information and to contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Office directly to verify the legitimacy of the request.
