As fans prepare for Sunday’s big game, AAA – The Auto Club Group is urging drivers to plan ahead and avoid impaired driving. Game-day parties and alcohol consumption often lead to an increase in dangerous driving conditions, particularly later in the evening.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 34 people in the United States die each day in drunk-driving crashes — roughly one every 42 minutes. In 2023 alone, alcohol-impaired driving claimed 12,429 lives nationwide.

AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper said many people plan their celebrations but fail to plan how they will get home safely. She emphasized that impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk and can lead to lifelong consequences.

Law enforcement agencies are typically out in full force on game day, and drivers do not have to be involved in a crash to face serious penalties. A DUI can cost $10,000 or more in fines, legal fees, and higher insurance rates, along with possible license suspension.

AAA encourages drivers who plan to drink to arrange a sober ride in advance. The organization also urges hosts to offer nonalcoholic options and ensure guests do not drive while impaired.
