The Tennessee Highway Patrol is urging motorists to take extra precautions as winter weather continues to affect travel across the state.

Officials say Tennessee has already seen a mix of strong winds, rain, snow, and wide temperature swings this winter, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions. Troopers are reminding drivers that preparation and caution can reduce the risk of crashes and roadside emergencies.

The Highway Patrol recommends motorists keep at least a half tank of gas, check vehicle batteries, tires, windshield wipers, and washer fluid, and carry emergency supplies such as blankets, flashlights, chargers, and nonperishable food. Drivers are also encouraged to dress appropriately for cold conditions and keep a first aid kit in their vehicle.

Troopers advise reducing speed, increasing following distance, avoiding distracted driving, and always wearing a seat belt. If a vehicle becomes disabled, drivers should activate hazard lights and remain inside the vehicle if it is safe to do so.

Motorists needing assistance can dial *847 (*THP) or call 911 in an emergency.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says allowing extra travel time and driving cautiously are key to staying safe during winter weather.
