Following weeks of speculation about his employment, University of North Alabama band director Lloyd Jones announced this week that he will retire, effective March 1, 2026, according to AL.com.

In a letter to students, UNA and Jones said he has “dedicated his career to building one of the region’s most celebrated band programs.” Jones did not specify his reasons for leaving but acknowledged recent challenges, writing that he regrets “the period of uncertainty experienced by our band community and UNA as a whole.”

Supporters had raised concerns online about Jones’ treatment, including a petition titled “Keep the UNA Band Alive,” which suggested he was considering retirement after nearly 30 years “due to unfair working conditions set by the middle administration.”

UNA alumni and band supporters voiced indignation over the past month, with a letter to UNA President Kenneth Kitts calling Jones’ retirement a “tremendous and lasting loss” to the band program, the Department of Music, the School of the Arts, and the university overall.

Jones, who succeeded his father, Edd Jones, as director in 2000, led the band to notable achievements, including a performance in New York at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November. In his announcement, he emphasized his commitment to a smooth transition for the program and continued support for its students.
