Lawrence County Schools to Dismiss Early Friday Due to Forecasted Winter Weather

Lawrence County School System will release students early on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 1:15 PM. The move comes as local EMA and weather authorities anticipate extreme temperatures and a mix of frozen precipitation over the weekend, with conditions expected to continue into next week.

All afternoon activities, including extended school day programs, are canceled. Teachers will be dismissed at 1:45 PM, 11- and 12-month school-based employees at 2:30 PM, and Central Office staff at 4:00 PM, at which time the office will close.

The district hopes early notice allows parents and guardians to make childcare arrangements.

Officials urge residents to stay off the roads if possible, drive cautiously if travel is necessary, watch for black ice, avoid crossing low water bridges with fast-moving water, and remain alert to changing conditions.
