Lawrence County Fire & Rescue is encouraging residents to begin preparing now for the possibility of winter weather later this week, even as forecasts remain uncertain.
Officials say early preparation can help reduce stress, prevent last-minute shortages, and improve safety if snow, ice, or power outages occur. Fire & Rescue personnel are already increasing readiness by checking equipment, training, and coordinating with partner agencies including emergency management, law enforcement, public utilities, and regional weather services.
Crews are inspecting generators, chain saws, fuel supplies, heaters, medical equipment, and winter vehicle gear such as tire chains. Emergency responders are also reviewing supplies such as patient blankets, ice melt, hot packs, and caution tape used during severe weather responses.
Fire officials say residents can take similar steps at home by preparing for slick roads and possible power outages. Recommended actions include stocking up on food and medications, bringing pets indoors, checking smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, ensuring heating systems are safe and properly ventilated, and confirming adequate fuel supplies.
Officials emphasized that individuals who rely on in-home oxygen should make preparations now. Fire & Rescue reports that weather-related power outages often lead to emergency calls from residents who lose power to oxygen equipment, and resources may be limited during widespread outages. Families are encouraged to ensure oxygen supplies are full and to consider backup power options if possible.
Fire & Rescue officials say even if severe weather does not occur, preparation now will help residents be ready for future events.
