Norfolk Southern Railway has purchased the 1,800-acre site of International Paper’s former paper mill along the Tennessee River, according to LCtoday.
The acquisition signals long-term plans to attract a rail-served industry to the property.
The International Paper mill closed in 2014, resulting in the loss of about 1,100 jobs, including many in Lawrence County, Alabama.
The development comes as Norfolk Southern seeks approval for a proposed merger with Union Pacific that would create the nation’s first transcontinental railroad.
