The Giles County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be deputies with the sheriff’s office.

According to the department, scammers are telling people they have a criminal summons and demanding immediate payment. Officials stressed that the Giles County Sheriff’s Office may contact individuals by phone only to arrange pickup or delivery of civil process papers.

The sheriff’s office said it will never call to demand payment, request money through a Bitcoin machine, or ask for gift cards to resolve a criminal summons, warrant, or any other civil process.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call or is unsure about its legitimacy is urged to contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 931-363-0911 to verify the call.
