The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will halt all lane closures on interstates and state highways during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period. No temporary lane closures will be allowed from 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, through 11:59 p.m. Friday, January 2.

The suspension is intended to keep traffic moving as millions of Tennesseans travel. AAA projects about 2.8 million Tennesseans will be on the move between December 20 and January 1, with 2.6 million of them driving.

Some long-term closures that are necessary for safety will remain, and workers may still be on site in certain construction zones. Drivers should obey posted speed limits, particularly in work zones. Violators caught speeding through active construction areas face fines of $250 to $500, court fees, and possible insurance increases.

Travelers can check road conditions, view live SmartWay traffic cameras, and get statewide updates at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic or by dialing 511.
