AAA projects that 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the year-end holiday period from December 20 through January 1 — a 2.2% increase over last year and a new national record. That includes more than 2.8 million Tennesseans hitting the roads, airways, and rails.

Most travelers will drive to their destinations. AAA estimates 109.5 million Americans will travel by car, with gas prices lower than this time last year. AAA reminds drivers to prepare vehicles before traveling, designate a sober driver, and follow Tennessee’s “Slow Down, Move Over” law to protect roadside responders and stranded motorists.

Airports are also expected to be busy, with holiday air travel surpassing 8 million passengers nationwide for the first time. Domestic flights are averaging nearly $900 — about 7% higher than last year — and AAA encourages travelers to arrive early, monitor flight status, and keep essentials in carry-on luggage.

Popular holiday destinations include warm-weather spots. Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami top the domestic list, while Cancun and Punta Cana lead international travel.

To avoid the heaviest traffic, AAA suggests traveling after 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 20 or before 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 21. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day typically see lighter congestion, though winter weather could change conditions quickly.
