General Assembly Approves New Business and Consumer Laws

Tennessee lawmakers passed several measures aimed at strengthening economic protections and simplifying regulations statewide.

A new law gives the Secretary of State authority to quickly dissolve businesses tied to foreign adversaries — specifically China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela — helping prevent national security threats.

Consumers who cancel subscriptions early will receive fairer billing, as providers can no longer charge for an additional month when cancellation occurs in the first half of a billing cycle.

Firearm manufacturers and sellers are now protected from foreign civil lawsuits related to criminal misuse of their products, except in cases involving defects or criminal misconduct.

The state also moved to ensure uniform employment rules, preventing local governments from imposing labor regulations that conflict with statewide standards.

Businesses receiving state economic incentives will face consistent requirements and cannot be compelled into agreements mandating union involvement or other outside conditions.

Foreclosure notices will now be published twice instead of three times in newspapers and must also appear online for at least 20 days to improve public access.
