State Sen. Joey Hensley, M.D., shared a message in recognition of Veterans Day, encouraging Tennesseans to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Hensley noted that while most veterans’ issues are handled at the federal level, state leaders should support those who served whenever possible. He also emphasized the importance of understanding the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day—Memorial Day honors those who died in service, while Veterans Day celebrates all who have served honorably in wartime or peacetime. Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It became Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all American veterans of every war. Hensley encouraged communities to attend local ceremonies and personally thank veterans for their service, especially “at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” the traditional time of observance.
