Tennessee lawmakers approved several measures this year aimed at supporting families, preserving history, and improving state operations. The General Assembly designated three commemorative months in honor of America’s 250th anniversary: June celebrates life, July celebrates liberty, and August celebrates the pursuit of happiness. These observances highlight the nation’s founding principles and encourage civic reflection. State employees can now take up to six weeks of paid leave to care for a seriously ill parent, child, grandchild, or spouse, helping retain workers while supporting families. Religious organizations can hold up to four annual fundraisers without collecting sales tax, up from two. The Real Estate Infrastructure Development Act allows local governments to create Infrastructure Development Districts (IDDs) to fund projects through special assessments and bonds, lowering the minimum required investment from $5 million to $1 million and permitting commercial participation. The Tennessee Heritage Protection Act now protects official government seals that commemorate historic events, figures, or conflicts. Utilities can borrow emergency funds with oversight from the governing body and state comptroller, and the law removes the requirement to solicit five proposals for bond sales over $50 million.
