The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) and the state Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners are reminding all licensed beauty professionals to complete mandatory domestic violence training before December 31, 2025. The announcement coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In 2021, the Tennessee General Assembly approved legislation requiring all licensed beauty professionals to complete free training, offered online or in person, to help them recognize signs of abuse, respond appropriately, and connect victims with available resources. Licensees were given four years, from 2022 through 2025, to complete the training. Those who do not complete it by the deadline will have their licenses rendered invalid. More than 71,000 licensed beauty professionals have already met the training requirement, with fewer than 2,000 still needing to complete it. The Shear Haven Domestic Violence Training for salon owners and stylists provides education on recognizing signs of domestic violence, navigating sensitive conversations with clients, and offering resources that may help victims reach safety. The training does not make licensees mandatory reporters. TDCI collaborated with YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee in developing the initiative. The partnership has been credited with equipping thousands of beauty professionals to identify and assist individuals experiencing domestic violence. Anyone needing information or shelter related to domestic violence can contact YWCA’s 24-Hour Crisis & Support Helpline at 800-334-4628 or text 615-983-5170 for assistance.
