October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Tennessee Department of Treasury is reminding residents that the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund can provide financial support for victims of violent crime, including domestic violence. The fund helps eligible victims and their families cover expenses such as medical bills, lost wages, mental health counseling, funeral costs, and support for dependents when no other resources are available. It can also assist with cleaning costs after a crime occurs in a victim’s home. State Treasurer David H. Lillard, Jr., encourages nonprofits, shelters, churches, law enforcement, and other advocacy organizations to use the Treasury’s on-demand Criminal Injuries training to learn how to help victims apply for compensation. The program is designed as a last-resort resource and does not cover expenses such as rent, utility bills, identity theft losses, or costs already covered by insurance or other sources. More information is available at treasury.tn.gov/injury.
