He was an active member in the Navy for 15 years serving his country with honor and enjoyed talking about his days on the aircraft carriers and all of his travels over the years. He was a photographer on the aircraft carriers while he was serving in the Navy and was a part of the Cuban crisis. He also served as a chaplain while in the service.
After honorably being discharged from the service, he pursued a bachelor of theology degree at Liberty Bible School in Pensacola, FL. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and would talk about Jesus to everyone he encountered. He loved reading the Word of God daily and would always have a message for the day he would share with his family. He also loved trout fishing and was proud of catching the most beautiful rainbow trout that he had mounted and displayed. He also loved archery. He had a love for nature and would comment how beautiful God’s creation was.
He was also a faithful employee with Murray Ohio and then Jones Apparel before retiring.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elsabeth Kirby Johnson to whom he was married to for 59 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Cheryl Anne Johnson Smith (husband Kent Smith); son, Chris Ward Johnson; and daughter, Deborah Johnson Crews (husband John Crews). Also, survived by seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Sally Horenn.
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Graveside services and inurnment will be conducted at Mimosa Cemetery with full military honors at 1:00 PM Monday, September 29, 2025, with Nathan Holloway officiating. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Plant a Tree. Condolences may be sent by way of our website at www.nealfuneralhome.net.
