According to WAFF, Limestone County Commission leaders have received a grant to purchase a 12-acre tract of land along Sugar Creek, which will be developed into a kayak and canoe launch. Currently, people launching kayaks and canoes often have to park along the edge of a highway, creating safety hazards. The county plans to build a parking lot on the new property off Cotton Belt Road so visitors can access the creek safely without blocking the roadway. The land was previously privately owned, with public access allowed, but safety and management concerns led the owner to restrict access. By acquiring the property, the county will oversee maintenance and safety for visitors. The project, supported in part by a $200,000 grant, is expected to be completed in time for public use next summer.
