A Colbert County sheriff’s deputy is being praised for his quick actions after rescuing a driver trapped in floodwaters on Tuesday morning. According to the Colbert County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Briggs Wright responded to a crash without injuries around 10:46 a.m. on September 2 in the 8000 block of 6th Street in Leighton. When he arrived, he found an SUV about 15 feet off the roadway in a flooded field. Deputy Wright heard screams coming from the vehicle and saw a female driver trapped in the back seat as water rose inside. Removing his duty belt, Wright entered the water, opened the rear passenger door, and guided the driver safely out of the SUV and back to the roadway. Once out of the floodwaters, the driver was placed inside Wright’s patrol vehicle, where he provided his rain jacket, turned on the heat, and offered her water while waiting for her parents to arrive. The driver later expressed gratitude for Wright’s swift response. In a statement, the Sheriff’s Department commended Deputy Wright for his courage and dedication to community safety.
