Gas prices in Tennessee rose slightly last week, with the state average increasing by three cents to $2.77 per gallon, according to data released Monday, August 25. The only major metro area to avoid an increase was Knoxville, which held steady at $2.70.
Despite the uptick, prices remain about 20 cents lower than this time last year. Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.16—up three cents from last week but still 19 cents cheaper than one year ago. On August 21, the national average hit $3.13, a level not seen since 2020 on that date.
In the oil market, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude closed at $63.21 per barrel Wednesday, up 86 cents from the previous session. The Energy Information Administration reported a six-million-barrel drop in U.S. crude inventories, leaving total stockpiles about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year.
Here’s a look at average prices for regular unleaded in Tennessee metro areas:
• Chattanooga: $2.74
• Memphis: $2.82
• Nashville: $2.82
(Note: There will be no Gas Price Brief next week due to Labor Day on September 1.)
