A tractor fire at Hampshire First Baptist Church on Monday afternoon highlighted the ongoing challenges facing the Maury County Fire Department and its reliance on volunteers. The fire was reported around 1:44 p.m. Crews from Station 22 in the Cherry Glenn Business Park were the first to arrive nearly 20 minutes later. By that time, both the tractor and an attached baler had been destroyed. Witnesses used garden hoses from the church to help contain the flames until Maury County firefighters reached the scene. Although the closest engine, Station 25 in Hampshire, is less than a mile away, it did not respond because no volunteers were available at the time. Officials said many volunteers were at work or otherwise unable to leave their obligations, a growing challenge across Maury County. The Maury County Fire Department covers 560 of the county’s 612 square miles, answering more than 2,000 calls each year. Staffing currently includes six full-time employees and about 60 active volunteers spread across 13 stations. County leaders have supported the department with new resources in recent years, but fire officials acknowledge that staffing remains a serious issue as emergency call volumes rise and volunteer participation continues to decline in Maury County. The department plans to continue advocating for additional staffing to meet the needs of the community.
