The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department is alerting residents to a scam involving fraudulent claims about unpaid traffic tickets.
Several individuals have reported receiving calls from someone posing as a representative of the Alabama Department of Transportation. The caller claims the victim has received a “final notice” to pay an outstanding traffic ticket and threatens that failure to comply will result in a suspended vehicle registration, revoked driving privileges, a damaged credit score, and possible prosecution. The scammer insists on immediate payment to avoid these consequences.
Authorities urge anyone receiving such a call to avoid providing personal information and to contact their local law enforcement agency to report the incident.
