Dr. Rivers Malone Lindsey, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on August
10, 2015, in Florence, AL, aged 99. He was born in Florence, AL on
December 21,1925 to Rivers Malone Lindsey, Sr. and Pauline Cauhorn
Lindsey. He grew up, first, in Eva, TN where his father taught school, and
then in Oakland, AL where his father farmed and taught. He attended
Coffee High School in Florence. At the age of 16 he went to the University of
Alabama in Tuscaloosa. WWII, however, interrupted his education. He served
in the U.S. Navy as a young Naval pilot based in Pensacola, and other Naval
air-bases across the east coast during the war. After the war he attended
dental school in Memphis, TN at the University of Tennessee Dental School.
He began practicing dentistry in Florence in 1950, retiring in the 1980s.
He and his beloved wife Judy loved to travel and thoroughly enjoyed their
worldwide adventures. He loved flying, photography, golf, reading,
electronics (he once taught a class on how to build a computer), and
puttering in his workshop doing delicate cabinetry and woodwork.
Dr. Lindsey was preceded in death by his beloved wife Judy D. Jackson
Lindsey, his parents, and his sister, Jean Gay Lindsey Mussleman. He leaves
behind five daughters and a stepson: Barbara Lindsey Brown (Dennis
Welling) of Nashville, TN; Paige Lindsey Smith (partner, Walter Cunningham)
of Florence, Meredith Lindsey Price of Trussville, AL; Courtney Lindsey Dollar
(Danny) of Trussville, AL; Stacie Lindsey Tompkins (Troy) of Nashville, TN; and
Ron Jackson (Pam) of Killen, AL. He will be missed, also, by his constant
friend, Sandi Rosellini, of Florence. He leaves behind a host of devoted
grandchildren and step-grandchildren, as well as ten great-grandchildren.
Dr. Lindsey will be missed by a host of nieces and nephews and their loving
families.
Services will be at 1 P.M. on Thursday, August 14, at the Florence First United
Methodist Church, in Florence, on Tuscaloosa St. Visitation will be in the
church sanctuary at 12 noon. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family wants to thank Dr. Lyman Mitchell, Dr. Edsel Holden, and Dr. John
Baron for their thoughtful, attentive care of Dr. Lindsey. The family requests
that donations in his memory be made to Florence United Methodist Church
in Florence, AL. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family at this time.
