On Sunday, August 10, deputies responded to a report of an unwanted subject at a residence on Dukes Park Road. Upon arrival, officers observed a woman standing in the driveway holding two torch lighters, one in each hand. When she saw the patrol vehicle, she began walking away toward the road.
Officers ordered the woman to stop and speak with them. She appeared visibly distressed, sweating profusely, struggling to breathe, and repeatedly licking her lips. She was only able to give brief one-word answers to questions and denied having any medical issues or taking medication or drugs. Based on the woman’s behavior and officer training, deputies suspected she was under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
The woman attempted to walk away but was informed she was not free to leave and would be detained. When asked for identification, she reached into her purse but did not initially produce ID. During a search of the purse, deputies found a clear pipe containing a white residue and later a small bag containing a white powdery substance suspected to be methamphetamine.
The woman was identified as Carla Buie. According to a resident at the scene, Ms. Buie had been allowed on the property earlier but had left briefly. Upon her return, she was acting erratically. The resident noted that Ms. Buie was not needed at the home due to the medical conditions of those living there.
Ms. Buie was taken into custody and charged with public intoxication, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where staff placed her in a booking cell and disabled the water supply to prevent the disposal of any potential narcotics.
A request for a drug examination was submitted to both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and local authorities. The investigation remains ongoing.
