As students return to classrooms across Tennessee, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) is reminding families to review their insurance coverage to help ensure a safe and smooth start to the school year.
TDCI’s Division of Insurance has released guidance for parents, students, and educators on key coverage areas including auto, health, homeowners, and life insurance.
Teen drivers living at home without owning a vehicle can remain on a parent’s auto insurance policy. Families are encouraged to review deductibles, assign teens to older vehicles, and ask about good student discounts. Sports cars and SUVs often carry higher premiums.
In the event of a crash, calling 911, obtaining a police report, and documenting vehicle damage are essential first steps. Drivers should contact their insurer to begin the claims process and may choose between a preferred or independent repair shop.
College students can stay on a parent’s health insurance plan until age 26. Families should verify in-network providers near campus and update auto insurance if the student will or won’t be driving. Many homeowners policies also cover student belongings in dorms or apartments—check with your agent to confirm.
TDCI recommends reviewing life insurance policies annually to update beneficiary information and ensure contacts are current. Sharing policy details with beneficiaries or trusted advisors can prevent future confusion. TDCI’s Life Insurance Policy Locator Service helped recover over $87 million in benefits in 2024.
For claim disputes or delays, consumers can contact TDCI’s Consumer Insurance Services team, which offers assistance and mediation between policyholders and insurers.
