North Alabama Medical Center Launches ‘Special Delivery’ Program to Improve Postpartum Health

North Alabama Medical Center (NAMC) has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving postpartum care across the region.

The Special Delivery Program provides wristbands to postpartum patients to wear for six weeks after childbirth, serving as a reminder to both patients and healthcare providers of recent deliveries. The goal is to promote timely medical care and early intervention if complications arise during the critical postpartum period.

The initiative comes in response to national concerns over maternal health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than half of pregnancy-related deaths occur between 7 and 365 days postpartum, often due to treatable conditions like anemia, hypertension, and infections. In 2022, the U.S. maternal mortality rate stood at 22.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, with significantly higher rates among Black women.

NAMC CEO and Market President Mike Howard called the program a “meaningful step forward,” emphasizing its role in empowering new mothers and increasing awareness throughout the community.

Before leaving the hospital, all postpartum patients at NAMC will now receive a Special Delivery wristband, designed to discreetly alert healthcare providers and loved ones to their recent delivery. The program encourages families, friends, and community members to “check in” on new mothers and support their well-being during the recovery phase.

While the wristbands are a helpful tool, NAMC stresses that they are not a replacement for routine postpartum visits, which remain essential for identifying and treating health concerns.

The Special Delivery Program is part of NAMC’s ongoing commitment to maternal and community health in northwest Alabama.
