As students across Tennessee return to classrooms for the new school year, state officials are sounding the alarm over school zone safety. According to newly released data, there were 799 traffic crashes in school zones statewide during 2024.

The startling figure is part of a back-to-school safety campaign urging drivers to stay alert, slow down, and eliminate distractions when traveling through school areas. With increased foot traffic, crossing guards, and school buses back on the roads, authorities emphasize that vigilance is critical to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Visuals from the campaign include school-themed imagery with messages like “Eyes on the road!” and “Slow Down,” serving as strong reminders of the shared responsibility drivers have to protect children.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security are among the agencies partnering in the effort, underscoring that enforcement will be stepped up during school arrival and dismissal times.

Officials encourage all motorists to treat school zones with the same caution as construction zones—slowing down, obeying posted signs, and staying focused at all times.

With hundreds of crashes already logged this year, state leaders hope the renewed focus on safety will help reduce school zone incidents and keep students safe in the months ahead.
