Lawrence County has expanded its commitment to animal welfare by transferring oversight of The Doggie House Animal Shelter from the City of Lawrenceburg to the Sheriff’s Department as part of the 2025–26 budget. The change includes a new Animal Control Officer and transport vehicle, while the county’s financial contribution remains unchanged.

Shelter Director Ginger Morgan, who brings decades of experience in animal welfare and nonprofit leadership, continues to lead operations. Originally from Lawrence County, Morgan returned home after years in Memphis, where she ran a successful pet-focused nonprofit and helped raise millions for cancer research benefiting both pets and people.

The Doggie House is currently housing over 120 dogs, many from hoarding or cruelty cases. To help reduce overcrowding, adoption fees will drop to $20 during August as part of the national “Clear the Shelters” campaign. Black and mostly black dogs can be adopted for free on “Black Dog Fridays.”

The county has made major strides in recent years, including building a new shelter, launching a spay/neuter program, and expanding animal control services. Continued progress relies on public support through donations and adoptions. Details on available pets are at PetFinder.com, and local groups such as Friends of Lawrence County Animals offer ways to help.
