Spring Hill Police Department Captain Justin Whitwell was honored Monday night with the prestigious Police Star Award, presented by the Columbia Police Department for his heroic actions during an active shooter incident earlier this year.
While off duty on May 31, 2025, Captain Whitwell responded to reports of an active shooter in a residential neighborhood in northern Columbia. Acting swiftly and without hesitation, he engaged the armed suspect and successfully brought the individual into custody. His intervention is credited with preventing further harm and potentially saving multiple lives.
Officials say Captain Whitwell’s quick thinking and courage averted what could have escalated into a prolonged and dangerous standoff. His actions helped restore safety and calm in a tense and chaotic situation.
The Police Star Award, which Whitwell received during Spring Hill’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) meeting, is reserved for acts of bravery or heroism that go beyond the normal expectations of duty, especially under extreme stress and risk.
Both Spring Hill and Columbia police departments praised Captain Whitwell for his service and commitment to public safety. Family members were in attendance as he received the award, joining the community in celebrating his extraordinary courage.
Captain Whitwell’s leadership and selflessness continue to reflect the highest standards of law enforcement.
