The Madison County Alabama Sheriff’s Office is urging area residents to be cautious, as phone scams are continuing to circulate. Callers have been posing as department representatives, falsely claiming that residents have outstanding warrants or have committed crimes, then demanding payment to avoid arrest. Often, the callers utilize caller ID spoofing to appear legitimate. They remind you that officers will never call to solicit donations, notify of active warrants, or demand payments – especially by way of CashApp, Venmo, gift cards or wire transfer. Calls such as these should be reported to your local law enforcement agency. Even if a call sounds legitimate, they urge that you call and verify before making any payment.
