Alabama families can save money this weekend during the state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday. From 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 18, through midnight Sunday, July 20, shoppers will pay no state sales tax on qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, and more.

The tax break applies to items like clothing and shoes priced up to $100 each, school supplies up to $50 per item, and books up to $30. Computers and tablets may also qualify, typically up to $750, but shoppers should check specific lists to confirm eligibility.

Many cities and counties across Alabama also waive their local sales taxes during the holiday, which can bring total savings to around 10 percent in some areas.

This tax-free weekend offers families a chance to ease the cost of back-to-school shopping by saving on essential items. However, some exclusions apply, such as video games, computer accessories sold separately, and cleaning supplies.

Experts recommend checking school supply lists and shopping early, as popular items may sell out quickly during the three-day event.

For complete details on eligible items and participating locations, shoppers can visit the Alabama Department of Revenue website.
