Limestone County is facing a critical shortage of sheriff’s deputies as the area experiences record-breaking population growth. Despite being the fastest-growing county in Alabama last year, the Sheriff’s Office is operating with significantly fewer deputies than needed to provide adequate public safety coverage.
Based on current population estimates, the county should employ at least 234 sheriff’s deputies. However, only 59 deputies are currently on staff—less than 25 percent of the recommended number. The shortage is particularly troubling during overnight hours, when patrol coverage is often stretched thin across the county.
The staffing gap poses challenges for response times, especially when deputies must respond to incidents in distant parts of the county. Delays of up to 20 minutes during certain times of the day have been reported, raising concerns among county leaders about the level of emergency response available to residents.
County officials are urging the development of a comprehensive staffing plan to address the shortfall and keep pace with the area’s rapid growth. In addition to more deputies, the county also needs additional resources, including another circuit judge and expanded jail space.
Local leaders say they are actively working to address these public safety needs.
