Columbia Fire & Rescue (CFR) is now accepting applications for its 2025 Citizens Fire Academy, a free, hands-on program designed to give community members a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a firefighter.

Open to adults 18 and older, the six-week academy offers participants the chance to engage directly with CFR personnel through interactive training, live demonstrations, and educational sessions. The program aims to strengthen community ties, increase transparency, and highlight the work done daily by local first responders.

Scheduled to run from August 11 through October 13, 2025, the academy will feature activities such as CPR training, station tours, equipment demonstrations, and presentations from CFR’s Emergency Management, Fire Marshal, and Training divisions. One of the highlights includes a mock fire scene drill where participants will get hands-on experience with hose deployment, ladders, and search-and-rescue tactics.

Sessions will be held at various fire stations throughout Columbia, offering a unique opportunity to learn directly from the professionals who serve the city.

Applications are open now and will be accepted through August 4, 2025. For more information or to apply, visit columbiatn.gov.
