Local and county leaders gathered Thursday, July 10, to celebrate the dedication of a new pavilion at Veterans Park, a project made possible through a partnership between Lawrence County government and the City of Lawrenceburg.
County Executive David Morgan and Lawrenceburg Mayor Blake Lay led the ceremony, joined by County Commissioners, City Council members, other elected officials, and representatives from local veterans’ organizations.
The new pavilion marks a significant addition to Veterans Park, which was established following the devastating 1998 flood that destroyed homes in the area. The park now features a walking path along Shoal Creek, RV sites, and a shaded gathering space for community events and veteran-related activities.
The park is named in honor of H.C. Edwards, Sr., Lawrence County’s last surviving World War I veteran. A memorial display near the pavilion honors the service of other Lawrence Countians who have served in wartime.
The pavilion has been a longstanding goal for the local veteran community. James Deatherage, representing the Disabled American Veterans, played a key role in the effort, along with County Commissioner and veteran Tim Clifton, who helped lead the project to completion.
