Preliminary data from the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) indicates a significant drop in traffic fatalities during the 2025 Independence Day holiday period. Four people were killed in crashes statewide, a sharp decrease from 18 fatalities recorded during the same time frame in 2024.

The enforcement period ran from 6 p.m. Thursday, July 3, through 5:59 a.m. Monday, July 7. During that span, THP investigated 132 total crashes, including 49 injury crashes. Troopers also made 99 DUI arrests and assisted 752 motorists.

Officials attribute the decline in fatal crashes in part to the launch of targeted safety initiatives like the “Safe on 70” campaign. The campaign, which began just before the holiday weekend, focused on U.S. Highway 70 and surrounding high-crash areas. It featured heightened patrol activity and public education aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors.

The THP plans to continue high-visibility enforcement efforts throughout the summer travel season and is urging drivers to remain cautious, wear seat belts, and avoid impaired driving.
