The Florence Alabama Police Foundation recently teamed up with the Florence Police Department to sponsor its annual Leadership Academy for participants in the Lauderdale County SPAN Program, offering at-risk youth a week of hands-on learning, mentorship, and personal development.

The SPAN Program—short for Special Programming for Achievement Network—is a nonresidential, coeducational initiative that supports troubled youth and their families across Alabama. The program uses a combination of modern educational tools and proven counseling techniques, serving students referred by juvenile court systems, schools, and other agencies.

Throughout the week, students interacted directly with officers from various specialty units within the Florence Police Department. The academy featured educational sessions and activities, including a class on the dangers of sexting, a hands-on DUI simulation, and a guided tour of the police department.

Florence Police Chief Shane Holt led a leadership seminar focused on personal accountability and the power of controlling one’s own actions and mindset—a message aimed at empowering the students as they navigate challenging life circumstances.

To cap off the experience, the group enjoyed a fun outing on the final day, with bowling and pizza to celebrate their participation and growth over the course of the week.

The Florence Alabama Police Foundation said it was proud to support the program and provide positive, impactful opportunities for local youth through mentorship and community engagement.
