The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District reports that Wilson Lock, located at Tennessee River mile 259.4, is expected to reopen by June 30, 2025—earlier than the original completion date of July 8.
The lock was closed in September 2024 after cracking was found in the chamber gates. Since January, repair crews from both the Nashville and Huntington Districts, along with the Tennessee Valley Authority, have been working on the lock. TVA provided new pintle assembly components, which are critical to the 650-ton gates.
Recent work includes installing additional bracing, valve repairs, and non-destructive testing. Crews are also applying ceramic metal to ensure the gates fit properly. The final steps will involve removing equipment and rewatering the lock chamber.
During the closure, the auxiliary lock continued operating, though it increased lockage times for larger barges. USACE says the total cost of the emergency repair is around $20 million.
