The City of Lawrenceburg’s Board of Mayor and City Council has unanimously approved all amended ordinances and approved resolutions on Thursday June 26th. The Lawrenceburg Fire Department received authorization to apply for two Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants through the Department of Homeland Security. If awarded, the first grant would fund the hiring of six full-time firefighters for a three-year period, with the grant covering a significant portion of their salaries and benefits. The second grant seeks to recruit and support fifteen volunteer firefighters over a four-year period, with no cost to the city. In a separate move, the Board approved a proposal allowing City Administrator Dick McKinley to enter into an agreement with Lawrence County for animal shelter services. McKinley explained that Lawrence County is better equipped to manage shelter operations, particularly since the majority of stray animals come from county areas. A key operational advantage lies in the use of trustees overseen by the Sheriff’s Department, who assist in shelter tasks. Under the agreement, the county would assume responsibility for day-to-day shelter management and operational costs, while the city would partner with the county by sharing a portion of the expenses. McKinley emphasized that the county’s existing infrastructure and resources make it better suited to oversee the shelter’s operations effectively. To see the full meeting go to the WLX Facebook Page.
