Recent black bear sightings in Limestone County, including neighborhoods in Athens and nearby Tanner, have residents on edge. Locals have reported bears near homes and wooded areas—an unusual occurrence for the region. Gauldin offered safety tips: don’t approach or run from a bear. Instead, clap, wave, or shout to make your presence known and give the animal a clear escape path. She also encouraged residents to remove attractants such as trash, pet food, bird feeders, and uncleaned grills. Alabama is home to an estimated 350–450 black bears. Sightings can be reported to the state for tracking and research purposes.
