TBI special agents are still looking into the facts surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday morning at the Maury County Sheriff’s Office, following the request of 22nd Judicial District Attorney General Brent Cooper. According to preliminary evidence, deputies were called to a gas station in the 2400 block of New Lewisburg Highway in Columbia at around three in the morning on Sunday after receiving a report of probable drug activity and a confrontation between a couple. Deputies discovered a man and woman in a car on the side of the building when they arrived to conduct an investigation. After a short while, the man—who was later identified as Clayton Tyler Dodson, 25, —produced a gun and fired at the deputy, hitting him in the vest. Dodson was hit by gunfire from both deputies and was later declared deceased at the hospital. The event resulted in minor injuries for the deputy. Through evidence collection and interviewing, TBI investigators are attempting to independently ascertain the sequence of events that resulted in the shooting. The District Attorney General will be informed of the investigative findings at every stage for his consideration and additional examination. The TBI does not decide whether an officer’s conduct was appropriate in these kinds of circumstances; it only gathers facts for its cases. The District Attorney General, who has asked TBI to get involved, makes that decision.
