Columbia Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the area of Nashville Hwy and Old Highway 31 at around 3:30 PM on June 12th in response to a complaint of a burning school bus carrying eleven children. The bus driver and their assistant had successfully evacuated and accounted for all 11 of the children before Columbia Fire & Rescue arrived on the site. The school bus was spared additional damage when the assistant used the onboard fire extinguisher to successfully extinguish the flames. In a frightening scenario, they performed an excellent job of securely removing all of the young children. However, there were more heroes besides the two Maury County Board of Education employees. Two females who live in the City Limits Apartments, came out to assist the bus driver in keeping the kids safe and together. They contributed to the children’s comfort and ability to remain calm.
