A child was injured in a traffic accident Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter on East Gaines Street near Mimosa Cemetery. The incident occurred around 10:43 a.m., according to local authorities. The child was accompanied by his father at the time of the accident. A police report indicates that the brick wall surrounding the cemetery obstructed the child’s view, causing him to enter the roadway unexpectedly. Despite his father’s efforts to stop him, the child rode into oncoming traffic and was struck by the front bumper of an approaching vehicle. Emergency responders arrived on the scene within approximately five minutes.

The child sustained a broken leg and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment. Authorities emphasized that the driver involved made every effort to avoid the collision and is not considered at fault. The family expressed deep gratitude to the emergency personnel who responded quickly and provided compassionate care to their child.

Officials are reminding the public to stay alert and cautious around emergency scenes. If you see first responders at work, please slow down, give them space, and stay patient. With school now out for summer, residents are also urged to drive carefully through neighborhoods, watch for children at play, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
