On June 4, twenty-four fortunate dogs from The Doggie House embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey from rural Tennessee to New York, where they will be placed in foster homes with loving people who are eager to adopt them. The Doggie House partners, Best Friends, FOLCA, and CASA trip, along with local community volunteers Jeff Pettus and Joe Beckman, who drove the dogs 13 hours to their destination, made this life-saving trip possible under the direction of Shelter Director Ginger Morgan. “Seeing these dogs climb into that van, knowing they’re headed for families who will cherish them —that’s what it’s all about,” said Jeff Pettus, FOLCA volunteer and animal advocate. “We may be a small shelter in a rural county, but these dogs deserve big futures.” To link available dogs in Lawrence County with rescue partners in the North, where there is a greater need for adoptable canines, travelling is a component of The Doggie House’s “True North” effort. Because every dog on the transport has undergone a thorough evaluation and has been spayed and neutered, they are all healthy and prepared for adoption when they get to New York. Joe Beckman, who is driving the transport alongside Pettus, added, “Every one of these dogs has a story, and we’re honored to be part of getting them on the path to their forever homes. This is what teamwork and community look like.” “We’re so proud of this effort, but transports like this aren’t happening as often anymore,” said Ginger Morgan, Director of The Doggie House. “Even shelters up north are overwhelmed, so when an opportunity like this opens up, we have to move fast. But we can’t transport our way out of overcrowding — we still need our community to help by adopting, fostering, and most importantly, spaying and neutering their pets.” The Doggie House is calling on the community to begin the next chapter and need volunteer drivers for upcoming transports, short-term fosters to care for dogs, and shelter volunteers to help walk, feed, and socialize dogs.
