Additional Information Over the Shooting Incident in Columbia on Saturday

More information has been released following a shooting incident that occurred in Columbia, Tennessee. On Saturday, May 31st around 3:07 PM, officers responded to the 3000 block of Somerset Lane where they discovered three people had been shot. A 46-year-old man named John Bidle was declared deceased on the scene. The suspect, Bryon Dean Childers, noticed Bidle standing outside his home as he was walking down the street with a rifle. According to the arrest affidavit, Childers stated Bidle was a “demon” and shortly after he shot Bidle while yelling “demon from hell” and “it was safe now”. Then, Bidle’s wife had come outside after he had been shot. Childers dragged the woman across the street, causing scrapes to her knees and elbows, proceeded to choke her, restricting airflow, and then shoved a vape pen down her throat, and then punched her in her face according to the arrest affidavit. After realizing what was occurring, 51-year-old Stacie Wright who was a neighbor, had come outside to offer assistance. Childers then shot Wright several times and she was declared deceased after being transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center for surgery. Additionally, a third victim, who was driving an ice cream truck, was shot in the hip and transported to Vanderbilt with non-life-threatening injuries. Childers then attempted to flee by getting into an off-duty Metro Nashville Police Department officers’ vehicle. While trying to gain control of the patrol car, Childers struck the officer in the face. The officer grabbed his service handgun as Childers attempted to flee the scene. Columbia Police Department then took Childers into custody. Bryon Dean Childers is charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, two counts of Aggravated Assault Resulting in Death, Carjacking, Possession of a Firearm During a Dangerous Felony, and Simple Assault. Childers court date is set for Wednesday, June 18th.
