On Saturday, May 10th, units from the Maury County Fire Department were dispatched for a water rescue on the Duck River near the Highway 7 Bridge. When units got there, they discovered that someone kayaking had overturned their boat and was now trapped in the middle of the river. Despite not being able to swim, the kayaker was wearing a life jacket. The water was knee deep where the kayaker stood on a sand bar, but it was rapid and deep on either side of him. When the victim started to tremble from the chilly water, two rescue swimmers went into the river to pull them out. After a successful rescue, the victim was able to leave the scene. The kayaker’s use of a suitable life jacket was the key to this incident’s drastically different outcome. As summer draws closer, be sure to use life jackets that are approved by the Coast Guard and that fit properly.
