Adient Sites in Maury and Henderson are Permanently Closing

More than 400 employees will lose their jobs after an automotive seats manufacturer announced the permanent closure of two factories in Tennessee. According to WARN Notices filed with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Adient sites in Maury and Henderson counties will close permanently this summer. The warnings were posted on April 22nd and 23rd. According to UAW chapter president John Rutherford, the facilities are closing because the company lost a contract with General Motors to provide seats for Cadillac vehicles manufactured at a Spring Hill factory. Rutherford said he was astonished to learn of the change when union representatives began negotiating a new contract with Adient last month. Layoffs at the Maury County factory began on April 17th, affecting 95 staff members. The Henderson County facility began layoffs on April 21st, and 320 employees would be let go. Both facilities will close permanently on June 27th. The employees at the Maury County facility are represented by UAW Local 1853 in Spring Hill, thus the DLWD stated that the Southern Middle Local Workforce Development Area rapid reaction team will work with the affected employees and the employer. However, Henderson County employees are not represented by a union, so the Southwest Local Workforce Development Area rapid reaction team was called to coordinate with the employees and Adient. The UAW represents more than half of the employees affected by the Maury County layoffs, and they are seeking to get those people recruited by another facility in Spring Hill that is now making seats for GM, according to UAW chapter president John Rutherford.
